Who are We?

Eastview members consider themselves to be not just tenants, but owners.

Eastview Principles

With only 15 residents sharing common spaces and facilities Eastview members encounter each other informally on a regular basis.  Over the years, this casual intimacy has engendered a feeling of community and has resulted in the evolution of a commensurate operating philosophy - a philosophy based on co-operation, courtesy and respect in the social sphere, and on democracy, consultation, accommodation, and transparency in the realms of administration and fiscal management..

These principles find practical expression in the qualities defining Eastview’s members:

Informed:  Members are encouraged to become knowledgeable residents by reviewing the Members Handbook, familiarizing themselves with Eastview’s by-laws, reviewing and Board & members memos, and by reading the co-op’s monthly newsletter – Eastview News

Active: Because Eastview is a democracy each member is encouraged to participate in co-op decision-making and is urged to attend meetings, submit ideas for improvements or innovations to the Board for consideration by the entire membership, and to volunteer to help with any intermittent and ongoing chores and projects, if possible.

Respectful:  All residents are expected to respect their fellow members and their property, and to treat them with courtesy and civility. We extend these courtesies  to our neighbours and to any service providers who visit our building.  Members are also expected to treat all common areas with respect and use common facilities with vigilant care.

These principles are in no way forcibly, or even subtly, imposed on anyone. Rather, individual members adopt and apply them to the best of their ability.  For 69 years we have found this non-coercive approach to be a successful one.
